What to expect in therapy?

Typically, therapy sessions last for 50-minutes and take place once per week however, dependent upon the needs and circumstances of the individual this can look differently.

Effective therapy is tailored to suit the needs of each individual, as it is not one size fits all. Therapy is always conducted in a collaborative and clear manner. The therapist and patient will discuss the aims of treatment and the specific goals that the client has identified for their treatment during the assessment phase. The therapist will ensure the patient understands the process of therapy and agreed upon goals prior to commencing treatment. An effective therapist will ensure transparency throughout treatment with the goals and progress of each patient to be looked at periodically.

There are a number of therapies that a psychologist may be trained in, some psychologists may work solely from one model whilst others may use a number of different styles in treatment. When deciding upon treatment frames they may reflect on; what research considers the most effective treatment for particular issues, how competent the therapist is in that area of treatment and, considering the client’s needs and preferences for treatment. Research, however, also highlights the importance of the therapeutic alliance and the relationship the client has with their therapist.

At Mental Clarity Psychology a 90-minute initial assessment session is organised and 50-minute sessions thereafter.

This gives the therapist time to understand your problem as well as, gives you the opportunity to see if the therapist is the right “fit” for you.
